[Ramblings of Rictus] The Blessings of Papa Nurgle

aka Converting Nurgle Tanks for Those Who Cannot Sculpt.

While I’ve never done a Nurgle army I have been unable to resist the lure of converting some vehicles for dedicated to the Plaguefather. It started with a Land Raider back in 2007 and since then I’ve found myself doing one every so often. I even pained a couple of them, which for me is a novelty.

There is one problem I faced when I came to start on doing some Nurgle dedicated tanks and walkers, namely when it comes to sculpting I have no ability whatsoever. Through various techniques I worked out as I went along this didn’t prove much of a hurdle afterall.

While not a step by step guide the following lays out the various techniques and materials I have used on the Nurgle vehicles I have converted – and in a couple of cases still in the process of working on.

Surface Texture I

This was the first technique I employed . I was testing out some paint stripper on a second hand sentinel I had to see how useful it was and discovered that the stripper softened the plastic and gave it an interesting surface texture.

When working on the Nurgle tanks I found I could achieve two different surface textures depending on the conditions I left the model when it was covered in the stripper.

This is the more subtle finish, edges are smoothed out slightly and a rippling effect occurs, the softness of the plastic allows you to distort the plastic and you can easily push something sharp through it to create holes. To get the effect the model was simply left for a couple of nights with the stripper plastered all over it.

This is the more extreme finish. By leaving the model in a cold area overnight then bringing it into the warm and adding more stripper the rough surface texture was created.

In both cases care has to be taken to mask off any areas you don’t want effected, such as details (vents, hatches and so on) and weapons (you don’t want barrel droop…).

I used the texture achieved with the stripper as a base to then add more effects over the top.

Surface Texture II & III

A combination of super glue and sugar sprinkled on for a diseased skin like effect. The sugar was built up with small amounts sprinkled on, with a final coat of super glue brushed on afterwards to seal everything.

Showing the WIP sugar and how it looks once some paint and washes have been applied (still PIP however)

For a different looking rough diseased skin like appearance I used thin tissue paper (clean tissues preferably, though I suppose used would be more Nurgley) superglued to the model. Often adding some sugar to the top covering of superglue gives even more texture. The tricky thing is how to end the area covered, often blending fleshy areas into it will work best.

Surface Texture IV

Using a rotary power tool (a dremel in this case) a pitted look is easily achieved. I found simply letting the tool choose where to go gets a more ‘natural’ look. Lightly bringing the tool into contact with the model and letting it jump and skip. Naturally care has to be taken so not to damage either the model or yourself. Occasionally I add more force to vary the look and bring more variety to the texture created.

Again a PIP picture to show the texture
once some paint and washes have been added.

Flesh

As I mentioned I can’t sculpt, frankly I can barely fill gaps with Green Stuff let alone accomplish something more ambitious. However I use plenty of GS on my Nurgle vehicles to add areas of ‘flesh’, deamonic flesh growing or merging with the vehicle. I don’t think it counts as sculpting as I am simply adding GS and then pushing, pulling and poking it into shapes and forms that look pleasing and interesting.

The quick and simple way of adding flesh.
Rather than simply covering a vehicle in GS I tend to use small areas or keep large areas uncovered. The aim is to add to the vehicle, not make it the filling in a GS bun.

The Dreadnought and Land Raider are examples where plenty of GS has been added but the shape of the base model is still clearly defined and much of the original pieces still show through. For vehicles which are not Deamonically Possessed I would add far less GS.

Another way to use the flesh is to cut into the model and fill with GS, this can be used to show that under the skin is the Daemon trying to get out or showing the vehicle ‘healing’ after damage.

Pustules and Growths

To break up the areas of flesh and to add interest I add ‘pustules’ and ‘growths’.

Pustules are a mix of GS balls, ball bearings and small balls taken from a water filter. The balls are pushed into the GS flesh, or arranged into groups as shown above.

The fungal like growths are made by using a lighter to heat one end of styrene tube. The tube softens and distorts into the shape shown. I use groups of three to mirror the Nurgle icon, in the picture you can see a variant where I have used different diameters of tube to allow one growth to fit inside another.

‘Gunk...’

Can’t think of a better term than gunk for the mucus like discharge or pools. This is a mixture of two part epoxy and glue from a hot glue gun. While still hot it can be manipulated and drawn out.

On the possessed vindicator shown in the pictures I imagined that the vehicle was ‘fuelled’ by victims being thrown into the liquid at the rear while waste parts are then discharged out the rear…I mixed in a grasping hand into the fuelling pool and added some bones to the discharge.

To finish here is a picture of the Land Raider – the first Nurgle tank I did finished off...

And to show that the same techniques can be used on a smaller scale here we have one of my Daemonically Possessed Plague ships from Battle Fleet Gothic...

I hope that small foray into the diseased world of my Nurgle vehicles was interesting. Please ask any questions you might have and drop into Recalcitrant Daze to see more of the vehicles above (and other things naturally...)

[Ramblings of Rictus] Looted Chimeras

As i'm a bit stuck at the moment on ideas for articles I thought I would show what I have been working on recently...

Not long ago I sold three Looted Leman Russ tanks, I had them spare and figured I could sell them for more once looted than as second hand Russes. They did quite well so I thought i'd do the same with a couple of spare Chimeras I had knocking around.

I kept things simple and Codex legal.

[LuckyNo.5] Joining The MWC Crew

Cheers Everyone! LuckyNo.5 here. MWC has graciously invited me to become a guest writer. I have to say I am humbled and honored at the opportunity. I plan to post about one to two articles a month that are informative and mostly tutorial based. A newly found airbrush fascination of mine will most likely be the focus of the first few articles.

About me Personally
I am currently located out of Philadelphia, USA where I live with my beautiful wife and 4 month old baby boy. A Graphic & Web Designer by trade, I've become a dabbler in many art forms including Photography & Illustration.

About me Hobby wise
I've been building models since I was a little kid. I started off with Star Trek and Star Wars Models. In fact I still have a very rarely updated Trek model blog over HERE

I like to think that I'm constantly improving as a painter, scratch builder/converter and have been getting more experimental with sculpting & casting. Eventually I plan to take this to the next level when I go back to Art School for my Masters in Industrial Design where I will learn more about 3-D rendering, prototype development and conceptual planning.

About 10 years ago my roommate at the time introduced me to 40k. It was an instant love for me, a sci-fi geek by nature. Now about $40k later I'm still very much in love with the game system and the models despite all the naysayers and new competition out there.

My 40k blog is over HERE. Some of you may know me for my Dark Eldar obsession. Armies I've started and some I’ve finished: Black Templars, Death Guard, Emperors Children, Dark Eldar and now Necrons.

Editors Note: Dont forget this bad mofo!  And what you are doing with it!

What it comes down to is I love building, painting and converting models and as I learn new tricks I will be sharing them on here. Hopefully my articles will help and/or inspire readers to create their own awesome minis and provide more fuel for this creative fire.

Want To Be A Guest Writer On MWC?

There's No Shame In Posting Pictures Of Attractive Women; Only Hotness

How's everyone doing? Good? Fantastic! Me too, as we here at MWC, in our sloth of writing lately, have got a great idea that benefits everyone! It encourages us to continue on with our laziness and gives our readers a chance to speak their mind to a very large following of their fellow readers. So without rambling too much, if you or anyone you know would like to be a guest writer for MWC on any topic that is modeling related, please post a comment here. We are looking for a few good guest writers to bring in some fresh ideas and view points on all the games out there.

So if you play one of the lesser known games, feel free to leave a comment here! Even if 40k or WHFB is your game of choice, that works too!

Spread the word! Let us all share what we have learned to those just starting out in the hobby!

[Rogue Trader] Space Marine the review

What, you hadn't noticed this game was coming out?  You live in a cave with no internet access?

I've really enjoyed the Dawn of War series of games and even a few of the others like Fire Warrior and Squad Command so when I saw this one was being offered I couldn't resist.  A quick trip to Steam and a preorder had me playing the two demo levels and eagerly awaiting the full game to unlock.  Was I happy with it?  Just click below to find out.

And in case you don't like suspense, or have a weak heart, yes I liked it.  My painting table will sadly gather dust for a while.

[The Rogue Trader] Toy Soldiers Depot Review

Toy Soldiers Depot is another of the miniatures sources that are worth being aware of.  Their stuff is not targeted at 40K, is cheaply made and is of course, cheap.  I'd seen a post about their stuff over at Dakka and had been meaning to order a couple of bits for a while. The Dakka post had suggested an APC as a Chimera alternate and then I also found a great looking artillery piece.  After making probably the cheapest order ever I had a couple of bits on the way.

[The Rogue Trader] Chapterhouse Studios Vehicle Kit Reviews

I've had my eye on some of the Chapterhouse Studios stuff for a while and decided it was time to place an order with them. Specifically I ordered the "Armored door and armor kit for Rhino tank" and "Death Angel doors for Space Marine Land Raider" kits.  Price wise, I think the Raider kit is very good for what you get.  The Rhino kit I'm not so sure on, it'd need to be a little cheaper for me to order another.  Not much, but comparing the two, the Raider kit is definitely the better deal.

Having ordered them I discovered shipping would be delayed due to a hold up in production.  Not a big deal as their communication about it was decent. When the package arrived it was well protected and undamaged.  They do a decent job on shipping.  So now, on to the specifics of the pieces.

[The Rogue Trader] Outwitting the paint pots.

Well probably the shortest post ever, but I was so happy with myself I thought it was worth sharing.  You know how the new GW pots have lost the little tab to keep the lids open so they are always closing on you and making it hard to paint.  You know the little tubes the protect the bristles on your brushes.  Unite the two and problem solved.  If its one of the tubes from a smaller brush it also keeps the tongue of the lid perfectly over the body of the paint pot.

Hopefully I've saved some people some frustration.  And if everyone else had figures this out already how come nobody told me.  :)

Now back to painting my Grey Knights.  Stupid NMM painting choice.

Marcus.

Celebrating 250+ Posts

In the beginning, there was only Matt. He had been through some tough times and needed a distraction. He loves models and conversions, so he decided to share his talents with the blogging world. He had "friends in low places" and the word got out about his talented work pretty quickly.

Next, he set out on the "Pay It Forward" mission- and his blog, traffic, and followers exploded.

With "Pay It Forward", Matt's blog became worse than one of those viral videos- everyone was talking about it and no one seemed to know where it came from.

As his popularity and "internet fame" grew, Matt decided he needed help and decided to add writers to his team.

One of those writers pulled all the juicy details out of Matt via an interview- and here it is!

Thank you for agreeing to this interview. I fully intend to write a ridiculous article, and have a little fun with you =) I hope you don't mind.

-Have all the fun you can! I love your sense of humor!

What made you think of making a team?

-Well, when I started MWC it was mainly going to just be a place to show my own conversions and models to get inspiration and to take my mind off the recent hard times I've gone through. Once started it quickly seemed logical to include a team of like minded individuals that also bring various things to the blog that I don't. Together, the team can cover a much wider audience and topic base. This way, its a blog the miniature wargaming community can all find something enjoyable in it.

What happened- did you contact folks first, or did someone hit you up?

-I was indeed contacted by a few good folks telling me I should put a shoutout out there to let people know MWC is looking for writers. Sure enough, right after posting asking for a team to be put together, Team Awesome was born!

What considerations did you have when you approached someone for your team?

- The first thing I would look for is what can they bring that the rest of the team can't. Such as a hobby interest that the others don't have, or a skill no one has. That way, each team member has a set of skills and interests that when combined with the entire team, means we cover it all! (and soon will be filling any gaps in things such as FoW and other games.)

Did you have anyone say "no thanks"?

- Hehe, many times. Not because of lack of writing skill or talent but mostly because the skills would cross over into another writer's area. To many people on the team would make things hard to keep organized. I think the team we have now is AMAZING!

What is your favorite part of working with the team?

- hanging out with my friends! Not to mention you guys and gal always keep me on my toes and open to ideas I would have never considered!

What part do you like least?

- Actually, there isn't anything I dint like about it. Team Awesome rules!

What plans do you have for MWC in the future?

- Big plans actually! We are going to be getting back to our roots so to speak and focus heavily on conversions and things that the average gamer can do. Posts such as Cheap Knights are a peek into the future. We also plan to be running a monthly modeling/conversion contest with each month having a new topic.
There are also plans to well-- actually, its a secret! You ll just have to wait and see!

What else do you want to say?

- Dear Brent, Dethtron and Lauby, MWC wouldn't be where it is without you guys, not to mention, Brent, MWC wants to have your child. Yes, that's right, a child between a human being (?) and a blog. And not just any blog, but MWC, which I like to think of the bastard child of HoP anyways ;P

Somehow Matt has managed world domination through awesome conversions...

"And with the information and photos safely hidden, the CEO knew they had no option. Majority ownership of GW was handed to the writers of MWC who then ensured decent codices and fair pricing. And the rest as they say, is history."

[Lantz's Corner] Chapterhouse Studios Review

Guess who's back with another product review? No, not Hank, whoever that is. It's me! And this go-around we've got Chapterhouse Studios in the mix. I've known about this site for quite a while and have purchased from them a very long while ago. Recently, however, they've had a slew of new products joining their line up which had me enticed to open my wallet. So what is Chapterhouse all about? Will they survive my slew of witty commentary or are they incapable of bearing such a horrible onslaught of horrible puns and comma abuse? Find out after the break.

[Lantz's Corner] Antenociti's Workshop's Werewolf Grav Bike and Coilgun Sniper Review

Is it just me or are these titles getting longer? Anywho, I'm back after quite the hiatus of family reunions, getting incredibly ill (not related) and getting distracted by shiny things to bring you another slew of product reviews from all of those indie shops you love so much yet also haven't heard of. I'm not sure how that's possible, but just roll with me on this one. This week we have a webstore that, well, I'm not even sure how I found it. In fact, I'm not entirely sure anyone else in the 40k community has heard of them as I haven't seen anyone post about them in my two or so years of blogging. The webstore's name is Antenociti's Workshop and it thoroughly stumps me how this company is such a no name. Why? Let's discover the answers to these questions and more!

[Collaboration] Codex: Grey Knights Review - Elites Part Two

We've saved the best for last.  Here we are closing out the Grey Knights force review with the rest of the elites.  The part that includes the Paladins and Purifiers that are forming the theme around which a lot of armies are based.

[The Rogue Trader] Bone Field Bases from Secret Weapon

I'd always thought Grey Knights were one of the cooler/fluffier chapters, and was really happy when the new codex was confirmed.  I'd been working my way through various Black Library offerings and picked up the Grey Knights book at this huge used book store near where I work.  It was a good read, but that is for another post.  The main thing was the memorable start where the Knights are attacking across barrow mounds, the dirt churning as the bones of the dead and undead come back to the surface.  Possessed and now trying, sometimes successfully, to drag the attacking Grey Knights beneath the blood soaked surface.

[Lantz's Corner] Micropanzer Valkyur Captain Review

If you've ever strolled through random independent miniatures webstores you have probably come across Micropanzer. While their selection of models is limited at this point, there are extraordinary things on the horizon. As for my use of their models at this time, I had my eye on the Valkyur Captain of Elite Guard to fill the role of my Rune Priest for the AdMech. This model looks pretty detailed and crisp from the images on their webstore, but what came of my purchase? Well, I was informed that you all want more details on these reviews, so here comes some solid info. More after the break:

[The Rogue Trader] - Cheap Knights Part 2 - Purifiers

I've been building out a Grey Knight army and looking for ways to not sink a bajillion dollars into doing so.  I'd made a previous post about cheap knights.  Basically a quick demonstration about how easy it is to build a second set of 5 Grey Knights for 1/3 the price of a new box.  One of the comments I received on that post was about Dark Angel Veteran sprues, and that suggestion was one I wanted to try.

[Collaboration] Codex: Grey Knights Review: Elites - Part 1

The Grey Knight Elites was another section we decided to break in two because of the range of choices provided. This part of the review will cover the Assassins and Inquisitorial Henchmen.  You have a huge range of options here as well as a lot of low cost choices that will help to fill in gaps in your lists.  Like the HQ and Heavy sections, Elites are going to fill out fast for Grey Knights.

[Lantz's Corner] Quantum Gothic Power Generator Review

Quantum Gothic is one of those new kids on the block; starting to get a good name for itself, but not quite as widely popular as some other shops, yet. Fortunately for them, they hit a milestone. A couple of weeks ago they made a transaction with the greatest customer this world has to offer. No, not Jason Statham, but you're close. It was me. The purchase I made was the above item labeled as a Power Generator. I have some plans in store for this thing, but my thoughts on the purchase are what I'm here for, so let's get to it.

[Lantz's Corner] Lightbox Review

Lightboxes are an important tool for any of us hobbyists that are also completionists. You've clipped, glued, painted, based, varnished and anti-shined each and every model in your unit and finally it's time to show it off. I'm starting to come across this situation pretty regularly as of late, and so I first set out to build my own lightbox. It wasn't that hard of a task, but unfortunately my cardboard skills aren't as fantastical as my plastic and resin skills as a couple of months after use it was starting to fall apart. It was then I noticed a lightbox kit on sale from eBay. More after the break.
